The New York Islanders defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 6-2, earning a win in Josh Bailey's 1000th NHL game.
Bailey scored the game-winner late in the second period, and Oliver Wahlstrom, Matt Martin, Zach Parise and Brock Nelson (2G) each added goals as well. Mathew Barzal and Anthony Beauvillier each had two primary assists in the win. Martin Nečas and Brent Burns scored for the Hurricanes.
Ilya Sorokin saved 32 of 34 shots and the Islanders extended their franchise record penalty kill streak to begin a season with a critical five-on-three kill late in the second period.

First Period:
16:29 - NYI 1, CAR 0 - Mathew Barzal feeds Oliver Wahlstrom across the ice on a two-on-one and he gets one past Frederik Andersen. Scott Mayfield also picked up an assist.
Second Period:
8:57 - CAR 1, NYI 1 - Martin Nečas blows past the Islanders' defense for a tip-in off a pass from Brady Skjei on a give and go.
14:29 - NYI 2, CAR 1 - Casey Cizikas forces a Hurricanes' turnover in the offensive zone, and hits the puck back toward Matt Martin, who recovers it and scores.
15:35 - CAR 2, NYI 2 - Brent Burns takes a shot from the point which finds its way to the back of the net off Scott Mayfield's skate for his first goal as a Hurricane. Jordan Martinook picks up the assist.
16:26 - NYI 3, CAR 2 - Josh Bailey scores in his 1000th NHL game, taking a pass from Barzal and working his way down the slot, beating Andersen with his backhand. Alexander Romanov also picked up an assist, his first point as an Islander.
Third Period:
3:59 - NYI 4, CAR 2 - Brock Nelson knocks in a puck from a Beauvillier pass for his first goal of the year. Anders Lee earns the secondary assist.
11:06 - NYI 5, CAR 2 - Brock Nelson scored his second of the game off a no-look pass from Beauvillier. Ryan Pulock also picked up an assist.
18:06 - NYI 6, CAR 2 - Zach Parise scores an empty netter on the penalty kill for the Islanders' first shorthanded goal of the year.
