THE SCORING:
First Period:
7:23 - NYI 1, CAR 0 - Mathew Barzal scored the first goal of the season for the Islanders as he beat Frederik Andersen with a quick far-side shot from Kyle Palmieri's feed. Andy Greene also earned an assist on the play.
9:15 - CAR 1, NYI 1 - Andrei Svechnikov puts the Canes on the board as he tipped the puck past Sorokin. Teuvo Teräväinen and Ethan Bear assisted on the play.
13:57 - CAR 2, NYI - Jesper Fast provides Carolina with its first lead of the game. Fast tipped in Jaccob Slavin's point shot to give the Canes a 2-1 lead. Jordan Staal also recorded an assist on the goal.
Second Period:
0:52 - NYI 2, CAR 2 - Brock Nelson gathers his own rebound and beats Frederik Andersen with his second attempt. Anthony Beauvillier and Noah Dobson collected assists.
6:30 - CAR 3, NYI 2 - Jordan Martinook beats Ilya Sorokin with a one-timer from the slot to restore the lead for the Canes. Steven Lorentz and Derek Stepan picked up the helpers on the goal.
11:28 - CAR 4, NYI 2 - Nino Niederreiter doubles Carolina's lead up 4-2 as he crashes the crease and sneaks the puck over the goal line. Islanders Head Coach Barry Trotz initially challenged the goal for goaltender interference, but upon review, the goal was confirmed.
14:20 - CAR 4, NYI 3 - Anders Lee cuts the Islanders down to one goal as he buries a rebound from the slot. Noah Dobson and Kyle Palmieri notched assists on the play.
Third Period:
11:36 - CAR 5, NYI 3, PPG - Teuvo Teräväinen extended Carolina's lead up to 5-3 with a power-play goal. The winger blasted a one-timer from the left faceoff circle past Sorokin. Tony DeAngelo and Andrei Svechnikov assisted on the goal.
19:18 - CAR 6, NYI 3 PPG - Andrei Svechnikov scored his second goal of the game, on a power play and on an empty net as
SPECIAL TEAMS:
On special teams, the Islanders went 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-5 on the penalty kill. Carolina finished the game having gone 2-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
GOALTENDING BATTLE:
Ilya Sorokin made 35 saves on 40 shots for the Islanders, while Frederik Andersen came up with 25 saves on 28 shots for Carolina.
NOTEBOOK:
