The New York Islanders dropped a 4-1 decision to the New York Rangers on Friday night in the fourth meeting of the regular-season series between the crosstown rivals. The loss halted the Islanders' winning streak at four games and marked just their second regulation loss of the season on home ice.
For the Islanders, their fatigue was apparent as they played in the second leg of their back-to-back set after defeating Philadelphia 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday night. On the flip side, the Rangers entered the contest flying out of the gate and took advantage of the Islanders' exhaust. Andy Greene scored the Islanders sole goal of the night, while Semyon Varlamov made 32 saves on 35 shots.

For the Rangers, Alexis Lafreniere, Colin Blackwell and K'Andre Miller scored and Mika Zibanejad added a late empty-net goal. Alexandar Georgiev backstopped the win as he made his first start in 21 days and turned aside 31 of 32 shots.
I thought we had a pretty good start, then we had a little bit of a sag," Head Coach Barry Trotz said. Same thing in the second period. We hit a couple of posts, it goes the other way. They were able to jump on some of our mistakes. At the end of the day, they made more plays than we did and they got the result they wanted."
Here are five takeaways from the Islanders loss:

UNLUCKY BOUNCES FACTOR IN OFF-NIGHT FOR THE ISLANDERS

From the get-go, the Rangers produced a much more opportunistic effort than the Islanders and it grew in their favor as the game ensued. For the Islanders, it wasn't their best effort, but they also faced some unlucky bounces - including hitting posts on a Brock Nelson power-play tip-in, and two-third period shots from Cal Clutterbuck and Anthony Beauvillier - that narrowed their chances of climbing out of a deficit.
Pucks didn't go in for us tonight, we hit three posts," Trotz said. If they go in and we get it 2-2, maybe it's a different story, but it never happened on our push. They got the third goal and that's all they needed."
While neither team got on the board in the first period, the Rangers came out with some noticeable jump and outshot the Islanders 13-7. The Islanders generated some strong looks, including a solid chance on the only power play of the night - as Mika Zibanejad boarded Jean-Gabriel Pageau at 10:56 - where Nick Leddy rifled a point shot on net and Nelson deflected it, but struck the crossbar.
Both teams got on the board in the middle frame, but it was the Rangers who had the 2-1 advantage heading into the second intermission. By the midway point of the period, the Rangers took a 2-0 lead as they netted two goals in the span of 3:56.

PICKER'S CALLS
Greene's First Goal of the Season
The Rangers rookie winger and last year's first overall pick at the 2020 NHL Draft, Lafreniere picked up the icebreaker on a net-front scramble. Varlamov made three initial stops on the sequence of attempts, but his blueline failed to get a clear and instead, Lafreniere buried a rebound on the doorstep at 6:05.
Just under four minutes later, a hot handed Blackwell - who extended his goal streak to three games and scored his sixth goal in the last seven games - doubled the Blueshirts lead 2-0 at 10:01. Some slick passing the right faceoff circle, to the goal line and into the slot, from Ryan Strome and Artemi Panarin opened up Blackwell for his goal from the slow slot that snuck past Varlamov's right elbow.
The Islanders seemingly cut their lead down 2-1 at 14:07 as Brock Nelson tipped in an Adam Pelech point shot, but the play was overturned due to Nelson's stick reaching higher than the height of the crossbar.
Instead of allowing the overturned goal to deflate them, the Islanders used it as motivation.
On the subsequent shift - and after play stopped so the officials could review Nelson's faux strike - the Islanders got the board, for real this time. A terrific forechecking effort from Jordan Eberle allowed the Islanders to regain possession and for Mathew Barzal to connect with Andy Greene, who was walking the blueline. Greene wired in his shot through traffic and past Georgiev.
"We knew there would be opportunities up high with strong side pull ups, or finding D off the wall there," Greene said. We had a couple of opportunities throughout the game. Fortunately, it went off a stick and found a way in. We were trying to get back in the game at that point. We were playing pretty well after we got down 2-0."

NYR@NYI: Greene puts Islanders on board

With a 2-1 lead, the Rangers didn't let up in the final 20 minutes of regulation and were rewarded as they scored their third goal of the game. Varlamov was tested as the Rangers were active in the offensive zone and held a 11-9 shot advantage.
Miller extended the Rangers' lead 3-1 as he blasted a shot from the point on a feed from Jacob Trouba. Then, in the final three minutes as Trotz pulled Varlamov in exchange for the extra attacker, Zibanejad scored on the empty net to make it 4-1 as he lofted an intended clear up ice.

VARLAMOV RETURNS IN NET

NYR@NYI: Varlamov makes save on Rooney

Varlamov returned to the pipes after Ilya Sorokin manned the pipes in Thursday night's 3-2 shootout win. Varlamov's record dropped to 16-8-3 in his 28th start of the season.
Coming into Friday's contest, Varlamov had posted two shutouts - of his four shutouts this season - in his previous two appearances against the Rangers this season, with a 4-0 win on Jan. 14 and a 2-0 victory on Feb. 8. His shutout streak ended against the Islanders' crosstown rivals was capped at 146:05 as a result of Lafreniere's tally.

GREENE'S FIRST REGULAR SEASON GOAL AS AN ISLANDER

Greene potted his first goal of the season and his first regular season goal as an Islander with his long-range strike in the second period.
The regulation tally was also his first since Feb. 13, 2020. With the goal, the veteran blueliner now has totaled four points (1G, 3A) through 41 games.

SAME LINEUP, DIFFERENT LOOK

The Islanders opted to use the same lineup that dressed on Thursday night's win over Philadelphia, in which Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac made their Islanders debuts.
Trotz utilized the same lines for the majority of the game, but as the Islanders were trailing 2-1 midway through the third period, Trotz made a few adjustments. He experimented with slotting Kyle Palmieri alongside Barzal and Eberle and in turn, shifting Leo Komarov alongside Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Zajac.

RIVALRY ON REPEAT

Friday night marked the first meeting in two months and a day between the Islanders and Rangers, it also kicked off the first of five meetings in the next 23 days between the crosstown rivals.
Coming into Saturday's meeting, the Islanders had the upper hand with a 2-1-0 record in the regular-season series, but the Rangers win evened it up 2-2-0.

NEXT GAME:

With the regular-season series tied 2-2-0, the Islanders and Rangers will get right back at it on Sunday night at Nassau Coliseum. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
