The 2025-26 season came to an end tonight. Mark Jankowski scored the winning goal, and Carolina defeated the Islanders 2-1 before a crowd of 15,231 at UBS Arena.
Bo Horvat scored his 300th career goal in the second period, with Victor Eklund earning the back assist in his NHL debut.
The Isles ended the season with three straight losses and went 1-7-0 in their final eight games.

The Isles scored only two goals in the final three games of the season…Matthew Schaefer had fifteen shot attempts, but finished the season tied with Brian Leetch for the NHL record for goals scored in a season by a rookie…David Rittich played for the first time since March 30th, started for the first time since March 24th, and played a complete game for the first time since March 14th; that ended a streak of fourteen consecutive games played by Ilya Sorokin… Felix Unger Sorum also earned an assist in his NHL debut…Five Islanders made their NHL debut this season, and four reported at least one point….Carolina scratched nine regulars, who totaled 393 points this season.. Bo Horvat joins Anders Lee as Islanders who scored their 300th career goal this season; prior to that, only three other non-Dynasty players had done so – all between 2004 -2006 (Cliff Ronning, Alexei Yashin, Miroslav Satan)…Horvat (31 years, 9 days) is the youngest Islander since Clark Gillies (30-364 on 4/6/1985) to score his 300th goal as an Islander; Gillies also did it in a season finale. Mike Bossy was 25 and Bryan Trottier was 26 when they hit 300 NHL goals…Victor Eklund is 337 days older than Matthew Schaefer; both were selected in the first round of the 2025 Entry Draft…The Isles lost only five games in OT/SO’s; it was their fewest OT/SO losses since the shootout was introduced in 2005-06…The Isles did not play OT in their last seventeen games; it is the longest single-season streak for the club in the shootout era.

NHL Draft June 26-27
The Isles have the 13th seed going into the NHL draft lottery. Last season the Isles moved up from tenth place to win the lottery, despite having only a 3.5% chance. They should have a 2.0% chance to win the lottery again; however, the highest they could move is third.
As of right now, the Isles have five pick, having traded their second-round pick to Chicago (in the Josh Bailey deal) and their third-round pick to the Rangers (for Carson Soucy).
AND FINALLY...
Despite spending 70 days in a playoff position after the calendar turned, the 2025–26 season ends without a postseason berth for the second straight year. Injuries played a significant role—just four players suited up for every game—but one constant never wavered: The Skinny. It was there after all 82 regular-season games, extending its perfect attendance streak to 1,178 consecutive games (including playoffs). With a little luck and good health, 1,200 should be within reach around Thanksgiving.
Nothing makes me happier than when fans stop me at UBS Arena to say hello; I genuinely appreciate all our meetings and look forward to having them for many years to come. Thank you for your support—and for reading and engaging with The Skinny all season long.
