EDMONTON, Alta. - Nine different skaters found the scoresheet to help the Carolina Hurricanes secure one point, but the Edmonton Oilers took the extra and a 6-5 shootout decision at Rogers Place on Thursday.

After Leon Draisaitl and Jackson Blake traded power-play goals in the first period, Carolina took brief control with a three-goal second stanza.

Sebastian Aho potted the first of those just 30 seconds into the middle frame, flying past Mattias Ekholm to pick up a loose puck and tuck it through the legs of Devon Levi. Another man-advantage marker put Edmonton back on level terms, but a returning Seth Jarvis made up for lost time with a dazzling solo effort to dance past Evan Bouchard and restore his team's lead. Logan Stankoven tacked on another before the buzzer, boosting that advantage to two heading into the final frame.

On the other side of the break, though, the high-octane Oilers had more to say before the game was decided. Connor McDavid, en route to a five-point night, scored to halve the deficit, then set up Draisaitl's second of the evening to knot things up before the third period was three minutes old.

As the clock ticked down to just 2:40 remaining in the back-and-forth, Juuso Välimäki stepped up in his second game as a Hurricane to give the visitors one more late lead, but McDavid worked his magic again with 88 seconds to spare as his seeing-eye pass slipped through traffic and sent the contest to overtime.

An action-packed extra frame featured chances galore, but no goals. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins then scored the shootout's only goal in the third round after Brandon Bussi turned aside both McDavid and Draisaitl. Shayne Gostisbehere, Andrei Svechnikov and Jarvis were the shooters for Carolina.

Bussi made 16 saves through 65 minutes as he backstopped his team to a point for the fourth time in six starts.

  • Nikolaj Ehlers set up Stankoven's strike to become the first Danish player in NHL history to record 600 career points (254 G, 346 A). He was also the first and only Danish skater to reach the 500-point mark on Jan. 24, 2025.
  • Jackson Blake scored and now boasts 12 points (2G, 10A) on the year, giving him sole possession of the second-most among Hurricanes skaters. His 10 assists rank T-7th in the NHL at the time of publication.

They Said It...

Rod Brind’Amour giving his blunt assessment…

“If you take away the five penalties, the game was pretty good. We did a pretty good job. That last one should never go in; everyone knows that. It’s just a bad bounce. We probably should’ve had two points, but that’s the way it goes.”

Seth Jarvis sharing his review of the contest…

“We did a lot of good things, but you can’t take that many penalties against a team like that. They have so many skilled players and such a good power play that it’s going to hurt you. Obviously, there’s other aspects of our game that we need to clean up, but I thought we fought well. We held in there, but there were some mental mistakes that kind of cost us a little bit.”

Juuso Välimäki echoing similar thoughts…

“Just too many penalties. Obviously, their power play is really good. In the first 40 (minutes), we didn’t really give them much other than the power plays. If we limit that a little bit, they don’t kind of feel like they’re going like that. The start of the third, we’ve got to come out better than that. We gave them life there. We could have taken it all away. A couple of learning things.”

Seth Jarvis after Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl combined for 10 points…

“They’re incredible. They’re two of the best players in the world, and it takes everyone in here. Everybody got their chances with them and just making sure we’re aware when they’re on the ice. Some nights that’s going to happen. You can see why they’re so highly regarded.”

Seth Jarvis on how he felt about his game…

“The first period, I wasn’t feeling too great. I was just kind of catching up to the game. After that, I thought I got my legs back and got a lot better. One of my biggest things is defense and being responsible. I thought that part was kind of lacking tonight, and that’s a big reason why we didn’t pull this one out. Obviously, there’s some stuff to clean up, but I mean, I kind of expected that coming into my first game.”
