The Series So Far...

  • Game 1: Nikolaj Ehlers got the Canes off to a flying start, but Tomas Hertl's late go-ahead goal gave the Golden Knights the first win of the Final.

On The Rebound...

  • Suffering their second defeat of the playoffs in Game 1, the Hurricanes now face the same scenario they were in just under two weeks ago. At that time, they responded to a loss by winning the next four games and ousting the Montreal Canadiens. While four straight wins may be tougher to find against the Western Conference champs, the Canes are confident in their ability to bounce back once again.
  • "I think you saw in the Montreal series, that first game wasn't our greatest for some reason, but I think if we can clean up a couple of things, we can have more success," said Sean Walker when speaking to the media on Wednesday. "There's going to be some ebbs and flows in this series, and (we'll) spend a little more time in the D-zone than we're used to, than we have in these first couple of rounds, but we know, when we play our game, we can dominate a series and dominate a team."
  • The Hurricanes were 22-7-0 (.759 P%) following a loss of any kind during the regular season, the highest points percentage in the NHL in that scenario.

Flyin' High...

  • Becoming the first player since 1989 to score twice in the first period of Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final, Nikolaj Ehlers also breached the 10-point plateau in a playoff run for the first time in his career.
  • His six goals trail only Logan Stankoven (9) among Hurricanes during this year's playoffs, and with three multi-point performances in his last five games, the Dane is hitting a new level at exactly the right time.
  • "He might have been the most dynamic player out there," praised Rod Brind'Amour. "Certainly got us two goals on his own. Special player, and he's been like that all playoffs, all year, for us."

In Net...

  • Frederik Andersen was dinged for more than two goals for just the second time this postseason in Game 1. Following his last such showing, he stopped 10 of 12 pucks in Carolina's Game 2 win over Montreal, allowing just five total goals in the four games that followed his first defeat.
  • Brandon Bussi would likely be the next expected option in the event Andersen needs a break. The first-year backstop wrapped up the regular season on a heater, following up his first set of consecutive losses (0-3-0) with a 6-0-1 run and allowing two or fewer goals in four of those wins.
  • Pyotr Kochetkov also remains waiting in the wings. Although he made two conditioning loan starts with Chicago (AHL) in April, following multiple lower-body surgeries this winter, his last NHL action came on Dec. 20.

On The Other Side...

  • The Golden Knights swiped home-ice advantage with a Game 1 win, outlasting the Canes in a tug-of-war that showed both the strengths and vulnerabilities of each side. Speaking to the media post-game, Head Coach John Tortorella said his team was "very fortunate" to come out on top, while acknowledging there are things he'd like his group to dial in for tonight's rematch.
  • "How we play, I think it requires patience. When you get a little antsy against (the Hurricanes), they can capitalize. They're that good. I think we have an understanding (of) how we have to go," he said. "It doesn't take much for them to capitalize. We just took a lesson from it; we're very fortunate in that we win the game, but there's some lessons in that game that we're going to have to figure out come Game 2."
  • The NHL's playoff goal-scoring leader, Brett Howden, boosted his tally to 11 with a third-period marker, while Mitch Marner and Jack Eichel picked up an assist each to extend their respective league-leading point totals to 22 and 19.
  • The star of the show, though, was Tomas Hertl, whose fourth goal of the postseason separated the two sides late in the third period. The 32-year-old went 29 games without a goal to end the regular season and open the playoffs, but since breaking his duck in Round 2, Hertl has scored four times and totaled eight points in his last eight outings.
  • With Tuesday's victory, Vegas set a new franchise record for consecutive playoff wins (7).
