ANAHEIM - While the wins and losses aren't vital this time of year, the Ducks got some satisfaction with their first win of the preseason tonight, 4-2 over the Coyotes at Honda Center.

The Ducks had previously lost their first three preseason contests by a combined score of 17-5, including a 6-1 defeat to these Coyotes two nights ago in Glendale.
Tonight Ducks iced a lineup of mostly youngsters, with Cam Fowler, Andrew Cogliano, Ryan Getzlaf, Brandon Montour, goalie John Gibson, former first round picks Sam Steel and Isac Lundestrom and standout prospect Sam Steel among the biggest notables to suit up.
And it was Steel who had the game's most electrifying goal, flashing a slick toe drag that sent Arizona defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson flying by before Steel buried a wrister from the left wing to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead midway through the second.

Sam Steel's incredible toe drag gives us the lead

"Josh [Mahura] made a nice pass up to me," Steel said. "I had Kiefer [Sherwood] going to the net and Cogs [Andrew Cogliano] trailing late. I was looking for Kief there but they took it away well, so I guess instinct took over and I put it in."
Anaheim had gotten out in front just two minutes into the game when newcomer Carter Rowney buried the puck off an end boards rebound. But Arizona quickly tied it on a Richard Panik tally.
The Ducks' one-goal lead became two late in the second period on a nifty passing play the finished with Cogliano feeding Fowler for the one-timer from the slot.
The Ducks were outshot 18-2 in the third period, and Arizona got within a goal midway through on a snipe by Brendan Perlini.
But the Ducks put the game away with a little more than two minutes left on an empty-netter by Max Comtois from his own blue line.
Comtois was a late addition to the lineup when Corey Perry was scratched just after warmups. Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said afterward that Perry was under evaluation by team doctors and an update would be forthcoming.
Gibson went the entire way in his 2018 preseason debut and had 29 saves. "First game in a while, so you don't expect it to be perfect," he said. "As the game went on, I got more comfortable. I felt normal. It was good to get a full game and get back into the swing of things. I wanted to have a good performance tonight. It was nice to get a win."
Anaheim plays it final preseason home game Wednesday night vs. the Kings then closes the preseason Saturday at LA.
"It's always good when the confidence builds in young players," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "We were more tenacious on the puck tonight as a group. Our forecheck was really good, specifically in the second period. We had a decent start to the game. There were a lot of positives in the game, but there were some things we'd like to clean up."
