Anaheim bounced back in big fashion on Friday night with a commanding 5-1 win over Winnipeg to snap the Jets’ winning streak and hand the team their first loss in regulation.
While head coach Joel Quenneville made adjustments to the Ducks’ lineup heading into this game, much of the win was attributed to the performance of the team’s fourth line, which remained unchanged.
Tim Washe and Judd Caulfield each scored a goal and tacked on an assist apiece, while Jeff Malott had two assists. Caulfield’s goal and assist were good for the firsts of his pro career. Tonight also marked the first multi-point game for all members of the fourth line.
Sam Colangelo, Mikael Granlund, and Nikita Nesterenko netted the additional goals with Granlund earning the 200th score of his NHL career in the process.
The Ducks special teams continued their strong start to the season as the unit went four-for-four on the penalty kill and Lukas Dostal made 15 saves in the crease.
As for Calgary, the team is still in search of their first win on the season after falling 7-3 to the Avalanche on Thursday.
“In the first (period), I thought we played with some energy and pace and created a lot of chances,” said Flames center Mikael Backlund. “It’s obviously really tough and hard and frustrating to lose again. We’ve got to learn from it, find a way to play a really solid 60 (minutes). We haven’t done that yet and it’s time we do that on Saturday (against the Anaheim Ducks).”
Six Flames players are tied with one goal apiece while Joel Farabee leads the group in assists with three.
Tonight is the first of four regular season meetings between the clubs as the Ducks will face the Flames again on Tuesday night at Honda Center.
