Nico Hischier , currently the second-youngest captain in the NHL, he is being recognized by the New Jersey chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers Association as the Bill Masterton Trophy nominee for the New Jersey Devils.
The award is given annually to the player to the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport.
Hischier fought through many obstacles during the 2020-21 season which meant he only participated in 21 of the team's 58 games. Prior to the start of the season, Hischier suffered a leg injury while training in Switzerland and missed training camp and the start of the year. That same season he also entered the NHL Covid Protocol, once again missing time. His string of bad luck continued when in March, he underwent surgery to repair a frontal sinus fracture after a puck deflected into his face in the Feb. 27 game against the Washington Capitals.
Hischier's 2020-21 season ended with 11 points in 21 games (6g, 5a).
The Devils captain returned to form during the 2021-22 season, where he has put up career numbers and left the past in the past.
His 21 goals this season are a new career-high, his 38 assists equally so. Through 69 games this season he has 59 points.
The winner will be announced at the 2022 NHL Awards between Games 3 and 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.
