Here's what you need to know heading into puck drop.
1. The Habs are away for their first road trip of the season, with dates against the Red Wings and Capitals on Friday and Saturday, respectively. The pair of games in as many nights marks Montreal's first of 13 back-to-back sets this season.
2. The Canadiens have a single game under their belts so far this season, but Wednesday's home opener was nevertheless one to remember. The Habs bested the rival Leafs 4-3 while starting the season at home for the first time since 2013. Cole Caufield scored Montreal's first - and later second - goals of the season to negate 1-0 and 2-1 Toronto leads in the opening frame. Sean Monahan and Josh Anderson also scored for the Canadiens, the former on his birthday and the latter with 19 seconds remaining in regulation to break a 3-3 deadlock.

  1. The Habs practiced in Brossard on Thursday prior to traveling to Michigan. Head coach Martin St-Louis confirmed that Jake Allen will be back in goal against Detroit, but the rest of the Friday's lineup will be known following morning skate at Little Caesars Arena. On Thursday evening, the team announced that Mike Matheson is expected to miss eight weeks following the results of an MRI.
    4. The Red Wings will be opening their 2022-23 campaign when they host the Habs -- among the final teams yet to play a game. New head coach Derek Lalonde will be behind the bench for the first time following a sixth-place Atlantic Division finish for Detroit a year ago. Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi, Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider will be players to watch; all four hit 50-plus points a season ago, with Larkin the leading the charge with 31 goals and 38 assists.
    5. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET on Friday. Catch all the action on TSN2 and RDS, or tune in on the radio on TSN 690 and 98,5 fm.
