TORONTO - The Canadiens will settle for a season series split against the Maple Leafs after dropping a 7-1 decision at Scotiabank Arena on Saturday.

The home side opened the scoring 9:08 into the contest. Mitchell Marner took a feed from Auston Matthews and fired in a power-play goal for his first against Montreal in four games this season.
John Tavares doubled the Toronto lead on a tap-in play from Marner, again on the power play, at 15:16 to head into the break 2-0.
Sam Montembeault had a busy opening 20 between the pipes, facing 18 shots.
The Canadiens got on the board to start the second, off the stick of Johnathan Kovacevic. The Habs blueliner launched the puck from the blue line at 2:28 for his third of the season. Mike Matheson and Nick Suzuki earned assists on the play, the former earning his fifth in as many games.

Through 40 minutes of play, Toronto held a 34-15 edge in shots.
Tavares made it 5-1 six minutes into the third with his second of the game with the man advantage. The Canadiens challenged the play for goaltender interference, but the goal stood after it was ruled that a Montreal player initiated the contact.
Auston Matthews and Michael Bunting rounded out the scoring at 13:51 and 16:50 respectively to end the game 7-1. Montembeault faced 46 shots on the night.
