MONTREAL - After being selected in the fourth round, 123rd overall by the Canadiens in June, 18-year-old left-winger Jack Gorniak headed home to Wisconsin to continue preparing for his first season in the NCAA ranks.

We recently caught up with the American forward, who is eagerly anticipating the start of his collegiate career.
You're heading into your freshman year at the University of Wisconsin. How's life in Madison treating you so far?
JACK GORNIAK: It's been great. We work out five times per week and then skate anywhere from three to four times per week. I'm taking one summer class - English - Monday through Thursday. It's been good just getting to know the guys and getting used to being on campus.
Have you decided what you plan to study at UW?
JG: I'm going to do general studies the first year and then I'll decide after that. One thing I'm leaning towards is economics. It's a competitive industry to get involved in and I'm all about competing. I feel like it's something I'd fit in with.
You actually predicted you'd be heading to UW to play for the Badgers when you were just in elementary school, right?
JG:I did. I wrote a letter in second or third grade that this was the place I always wanted to play my college hockey. That was always my dream and I put in the work to get here and it came true. It's only two hours from home in West Salem, so my parents can come and watch the games, too. That's kind of a big thing. I think this is by far the best university to play hockey for. They have one of the best coaching staffs in the NCAA, so I'm just excited to put the jersey on and get to work.

How are you approaching the transition to the college game?
JG: I think it's going to be a challenge going from high school to college, but it's something I'm ready to take on. I think my game's already been developing since I got here. I'm just going to continue to make strides and I think it's going to be a good year. There's going to be roadblocks and bumps. There's going to be a lot of learning to do, but it's all a part of the process. I've just got to trust it.
Let's rewind a bit and talk about the NHL Draft in Dallas. In retrospect, what really stands out most from the experience?
JG: It's just a dream come true to be drafted by one of the greatest teams in NHL history. With the amount of success they've had, I couldn't be more excited. I think just being there with my family, that's just the best memory - spending more time with them. Although it was a stressful weekend, it was a relaxing weekend, too. You just sit and wait and see what happens. It was very special. They were very happy and emotional when they heard my name being called.

When you met the media for the first time in Texas, you described yourself as "a fast, energetic forward who just causes a lot of havoc for the other team". Where does your playing style come from?
JG: I think it just comes from my work ethic overall. I'm a player who works very hard on and off the ice to get better. At the end of the day, it just comes down to who wants it more. That's something my dad has always pressed into me. He just says - "Be the hardest working player on the ice and everything will work out". That's the type of player I want to be - a fast and energetic playmaker, someone who's always around the puck and moving the puck.
You certainly don't shy away from putting in plenty of work in the gym. Your stellar fitness testing results at the NHL Combine proved that.
JG: I worked out at a gym called CrossFit Acceleration with my trainer Alex Bode once my season was over. That's where I did a lot of the preparation, working out every day. They were tough workouts. I focused on some of the things I was going to see there in Buffalo. It ended up going really well. The more off-ice training you do, the better you get.
I know Joe Pavelski is a big hockey influence for you, being a Wisconsin native and a Badger alum. But, you're also a big Brendan Gallagher fan, right?
JG: He's definitely a player I've loved to watch and model my game after. He's got good speed. He also gets to the net, gets pucks to the net and does the dirty work. He's the complete package. I like that about him.

So, what's next for you as the NCAA season approaches?
JG: I'm just going to continue to work hard and develop some of those on-ice skills. I also have to get used to academic life in college, too. That's a big part, balancing academics and hockey.
