1972

BOSTON - The Boston Bruins will host a 50-year anniversary celebration of the 1972 Stanley Cup Championship team on Thursday, April 14, prior to their game against the Ottawa Senators at 7 p.m.

The celebration will honor the 1972 Stanley Cup team, which became champions after defeating the New York Rangers in Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals on May 11, 1972. The series marked the Bruins' second win over the Rangers for a Stanley Cup, with the first being in 1929.
The win capped a 54-13-11 season in which forward Phil Esposito (66 goals, 67 assists, 133 points) and defenseman Bobby Orr (37 goals, 80 assists, 117 points) led the NHL in scoring. Following wins over the Toronto Maple Leafs and St. Louis Blues in the first two rounds, the Bruins defeated the Rangers in the final series, 4-2, for the Stanley Cup. Orr went on to win his second Conn Smythe Trophy as the post-season MVP.
Members of the 1972 team in attendance will include Don Awrey, John Bucyk, Ken Hodge, Don Marcotte, Garry Peters, Dallas Smith, Rick Smith, and family members of Ace Bailey and John McKenzie. Members of the team, as well as Bruins coaches and staff, will wear limited-edition pins honoring the entire 1972 team.
The ceremony will begin with a commemorative video of the 1972 team's run for the Cup, including interviews with players and media. Following the video, members and representatives of the 1972 Stanley Cup team will participate in a ceremonial puck drop prior to the game.
Fans attending the game will have the opportunity to receive a 1972 commemorative poster when entering TD Garden through the turnstiles. Additionally, there will be in-game trivia and video segments highlighting players and moments from the 1972 championship run.
