The Blackhawks came up big in Game 5 to pull themselves back into the Western Conference Semifinal series against Detroit, but they were far from out of the woods as the scene shifted back to Joe Louis Arena for Game 6.

"We knew we had to win and going into Joe Louis Arena, it isn't an easy building to play in against Detroit," forward Dave Bolland recalled this week. "They were always so great at home and they always came out hard at home and we knew that if we don't finish this, we're done here and the season could be over. We were ready to win at Joe Louis and bring it back to Chicago."

2013 REWIND

It was the familiar cast of characters stepping up with the series on the line. Marian Hossa notched his fifth of the playoffs to open the scoring just under four minutes in. Bryan Bickell matched that number to break a 2-2 tie early in the third period. And Jonathan Toews registered the primary assist on both.

But it was fourth-liner Michael Frolik's converted penalty shot - his second such postseason feat - that would stand as the deciding factor in the eventual 4-3 win to force Game 7 in Chicago.

"When you want to go far in the playoffs, that's one of the most important things on a team to have: the depth," Hossa said of the 2013 roster. "If you don't have that, it's really tough because one line cannot carry the two months (of) playoffs, so you have to have third and fourth lines contribute and I think that's what we had."

The Red Wings series as a whole, in fact, could've have had a different outcome if not for that all-important depth. In Game 1, it was fourth-liner Marcus Kruger who put the game away in the middle of the third. In the do-or-die Game 5, third-liner Andrew Shaw struck twice, again putting the game away late. Frolik's game-winner was right on par.

2013 Rewind: Marian Hossa

"That was amazing, fourth and third lines playing such a strong role for that team and at the time there were (even) extra players (out of the lineup) waiting for their time that were really good players," Hossa said. "That was our (secret) to winning in 2013 because we had such a strong lineup."

"I don't think (Stan Bowman) gets enough credit for that 2013 team to be honest with you," Patrick Sharp recalled. "Stan brought in a lot of new players. That was the time where Brandon Saad, Marcus Kruger, Nick Leddy, Andrew Shaw - they all (came) up from the minors ... all of the sudden it's like, 'Wow, what a breath of fresh air. This locker room is fun, it's enthusiastic, these guys are bringing energy every night,' and it just made the job of those older veteran players just that much better."
