Mason Marchment had a breakout season last year with Florida leading to a four-year free agent contract with the Stars. He got a big raise in pay, but he also got a big raise in responsibility. The 27-year-old forward said he doesn't look at it that way.
"I don't think it's a challenge; it's an opportunity," Marchment said. "I played some overtime in Florida and some power play, just not as much. The opportunity is nice."

As much as Marchment did wonders with his time on ice last season (14:07), the opportunity is different. He's logging 15:46 this season, including 1:51 on the power play, up from 0:52 in Florida. He's playing beside Tyler Seguin most nights, and he's been on the ice for 4:02 in overtime. He had 15 seconds total in Florida. It's a big jump.
"He's a confident kid," said Stars coach Pete DeBoer, who has known Marchment for years. "He had success last year in Florida and we've given him a lot of responsibility in different situations here. He's a pretty even keel guy, nothing seems to faze him. If anything, he wants more."
In the past week, Marchment helped Dallas come back against Minnesota with a key goal and assist to squeak out a point in the standings, and he had two assists against Detroit, including the game-winner in overtime.
When asked about the Detroit game and overtime, Marchment said he just wants to be on the ice.
"Last game, it worked out, so as much opportunity as you can get, you want to take advantage of it," he said.
And while it seems he's getting more comfortable, DeBoer said he feels the new Stars forward has been good from the start.
"I think his game has been pretty consistent," DeBoer said.
The coaching staff continues to look for the right mix on Marchment's line. He and Seguin have been together from the start, but they have rotated Denis Gurianov, Ty Dellandrea and Radek Faksa at times.
"We're still looking for that line to be consistently dangerous, but that's not just on him," DeBoer said of Marchment. "That's on the other guys on the line too."
Which means there will be even more opportunity ahead.
