MORNING SKATE REPORT

PITTSBURGH, PA - The Edmonton Oilers (24-26-7) headed due east following a quick skate on Tuesday morning and will kick off a three-game Eastern road swing vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins (29-20-7) tonight for a Wednesday night matchup.
The first of two meetings between the clubs this season came all the way back on October 23 in Edmonton when a back-and-forth, high-octane affair had to be settled in overtime where Sidney Crosby sealed the deal with an early goal-of-the-year candidate to give Pittsburgh the 6-5 victory.
With the Oilers best play of late coming on the road (6-3-3 in the last 12), the recurring mandate from coach and players alike is seizing the chance in front of them to make hay away from home and, with a wildcard spot still within reach, they know this particular three-game set is rife with opportunity as they sit six points back of the Minnesota Wild for the final playoff spot in the West heading into Wednesday's matchup with two games in hand.
"Collectively as a group, we seem to simplify things on the road where at home we try to put on too much of a show, that might be the word for it," said forward Zack Kassian. "On the road, we play simple, hard hockey. We limit our turnovers, we grind the team down, we get more red zone opportunities. That's the game we're going to have to bring (on this road trip) and continue at home."
Oilers Head Coach Hitchcock echoed the sentiment.
"For whatever reason, we've played very, very well on the road. We've played with a real high level of intensity and directness. None of us, even the players, can figure it out but we're going to need it tonight," said Hitchcock.
While the Oilers are fighting their own battle in a congested Western Conference, the Pens hold the last wildcard position in the East, currently four points back of Montreal and just one and two points ahead of Carolina and Buffalo, respectively, who are hot on their heels.
Twice-a-year matchups can pose a challenge for both sides, especially when the stretches between the games are extended. And for Hitchcock personally, it's the first time he'll be seeing the Pens this season as a member of the Oilers organization but he's well aware of the unique threats Pittsburgh poses, especially when number 87 is lurking on the ice.
"His anticipation when the opposition has the puck is so high and he knows where it's going ahead of time," said Hitchcock of Crosby. "His thinking on the ice when the other team has the puck is elite. He knows when to pick it off and when to freeze people."
Particularly of note from a Pittsburgh perspective is the absence of Evgeni Malkin from their lineup tonight as he will serve his one-game suspension for an intentional stick swing on Philadelphia's Michael Raffl when the two teams met on Monday night.
Hitchcock also discussed Pittsburgh's usual one-two punch of Crosby and Malkin down the middle, the threat it poses and how the latter's suspension could change the dynamic of tonight's line matching.
"It's a hard matchup for us and for anybody right now especially because we've decided to load up with our two guys (McDavid and Draisaitl) on one line. It would have been a hard matchup for us," said Hitchcock, not hiding the obvious fact that the timing of Malkin's suspension could play into the Oilers hand.
After looking to Cam Talbot for the last three, the Oilers will go back to Mikko Koskinen between the pipes for his first start since an overtime loss in Montreal on February 3 where he turned aside 23 of 27 shots. The big Finn will be looking to improve on his 14-11-2 record and .906 save percentage in his first-ever game against the Penguins.
LINEUP NOTES
The Oilers hit the ice in Pittsburgh for a full morning skate on Wednesday. Forwards Ty Rattie and Jujhar Khaira, who were both day-to-day with lower body injuries following last game, are confirmed to be in the lineup via Coach Hitchcock's pre-game comments where he added that Kyle Brodziak will be a healthy scratch.
On defence, Alex Petrovic is set to draw back in after missing 11 of the last 12 games and will make up half of the Oilers third pairing along with Kevin Gravel. Matt Benning will miss his second straight game as he recovers from an undisclosed injury.
Lineups will be made apparent at warmups but here is what they could potentially look like:
Forwards
Draisaitl - McDavid - Kassian
Lucic - Nugent-Hopkins - Puljujarvi
Khaira - Malone - Chiasson
Rieder - Cave - Rattie
Defence

Nurse - Russell

PREVIEW

OILERS (24-26-5) at PENGUINS (29-20-7)
TV: 6:00 p.m. MST; Televised on Sportsnet
Head-to-Head:
Tonight's game is the final of two meetings between the two teams this season. The first meeting between the clubs was a 6-5 overtime win for the Penguins, with Sidney Crosby scoring in OT.
Four of the last six games between these two teams has gone to extra time. Pittsburgh won two in a overtime and one in a shootout while the Oilers won one in a shootout.
Oilers team scope:
The Oilers snapped a six-game winless skid (0-4-2) last Thursday with a win over the Minnesota Wild but fell 5-2 on Saturday against the Sharks. That win against the Wild was crucial as Minnesota is as of right now the apparent target for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Edmonton is six points back of Minnesota but hold two games in hand.
Connor McDavid is third in the NHL in scoring with 81 points, one point back of Patrick Kane and seven back of Nikita Kucherov. Leon Draisaitl is 11th in the NHL with 66 points. He's only three points out of eighth.
Penguins team scope:
The Penguins are holding down the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference, one point up on Carolina. They're in a bit of a rough patch with only one win in their last five games. That win came last time out in a 4-1 win in Philadelphia on Monday night.
Sidney Crosby has 65 points on the season, which ties him for 15th only one point back of Draisaitl. Phil Kessel is second on the club with 58 points, 25th in the NHL.
Evgeni Malkin will not play tonight as he was suspended one game for high sticking Philadelphia's Michael Raffl.
By the Numbers:
McDavid has points in seven consecutive games (2G, 9A, 11PTS) and points in 18 of his last 20 games, posting 32 points (12G, 20A). ... The Oilers are the only NHL team with two 30-goal scorers (Draisaitl - 31, McDavid - 31).
Darnell Nurse scored his seventh goal of the season, and 28th point on Feb. 7 at MIN, setting a new career-best goal total and increasing his career-best point total. His previous career-bests were six goals, 21 assists and 27 points, set in 2017-18.
Injury Report:
OILERS - Matt Benning (undisclosed) is questionable; Ty Rattie (lower body) is probable; Jujhar Khaira (foot) is probable
PENGUINS - Justin Schultz (fractured leg) is out; Zach Aston-Reese (fractured hand) is out; Olli Maatta (upper body) is questionable
