EDMONTON, AB - Oilers Head Coach Todd McLellan isn't tempering his expectations regarding Kailer Yamamoto this time around.
The Oilers coach is in awe of the 5-foot-8 forward, who - after a two-goal performance against the Jets on Sunday - is up to four goals and six points in three exhibition season games.
McLellan commented on the Spokane, WA, native's case to become a regular piece in the Oilers 2018-19 offensive cast.
"Awfully strong," McLellan stated. "Very much like last year. In fact, I would say it's an improvement or better. He looks confident."
After being drafted 22nd-overall in the 2017 NHL Draft, Yamamoto entered Oilers Camp last year and impressed early, tying Patrik Laine for the pre-season lead in goals with five. The 19-year-old earned a nine-game stint with the club during the regular season, posting three assists before being assigned to the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League.
Since the beginning of Oilers Main Camp, Yamamoto's stock within the team and confidence has continually risen. McLellan couldn't help but be taken away by the winger's fearlessness inside the crease, where he scored both his goals on Sunday.
