Butcher signs three-year contract with Devils, avoids arbitration hearing

Defenseman gets $3.73 million annually after 30-point season @NHLdotcom

Will Butcher signed a three-year, $11.19 million contract with the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday. It has an average annual value of $3.73 million.

The 24-year-old defenseman, who was a restricted free agent, had a salary arbitration hearing scheduled for Friday. He had 30 points (four goals, 26 assists) in 78 games with the Devils last season.

Selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the fifth round (No. 123) of the 2013 NHL Draft, Butcher didn't sign with them and agreed to a two-year, entry-level contract (AAV $925,000) with New Jersey on Aug. 27, 2017.

Butcher, who won the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in NCAA Division I men's hockey in 2016-17 with the University of Denver, has 74 points (nine goals, 65 assists) in 159 regular-season games for the Devils and four points (one goal, three assists) in five Stanley Cup Playoff games.
