Alex Ovechkin scored in his first game of the preseason, but the Washington Capitals lost 5-2 to the Montreal Canadiens at Videotron Centre in Quebec City on Thursday.
Brendan Gallagher, Michael Chaput and Jacob de la Rose scored in the first period for Montreal. Artturi Lehkonen made it 4-0 at 2:28 of the second before Ovechkin scored on the power play at 5:17 to make it 4-1. Connor Hobbs got the Capitals to within 4-2 at 13:06, but Rinat Valiev made it 5-2 at 10:07 of the third period.
