Lyon reading split

Alex Lyon probably doesn’t have to explain his job very often.

But kids ask the darndest questions sometimes.

While participating in a book reading on Sunday, the Detroit Red Wings goalie had to explain the sport of ice hockey to a curious kid who asked Lyon about his job.

Lyon introduced himself as the goalie for the Red Wings, then asked the kids to raise their hand if they know about ice hockey. A handful of the kids raised their hand, but one little girl had a followup question for the NHL player.

“What’s ice hockey?” she asked after Lyon called on her.

Then Lyon had to think of how to describe the sport he’s been playing his entire life.

“Uh, it’s a sport that’s played on a big sheet of ice,” Lyon explained. “You have hockey skates, I don’t know if you know figure skates or hockey skates. You have blades on your feet to move around the ice.

“It’s a pretty weird sport to be honest with you,” he said, which got a laugh from the adults in the room.

Based on that description alone, we have no doubt that Lyon just molded some new hockey fans.
