Top NHL free agent goalies: Jarry, Andersen, Varlamov likely available

With the NHL free agent signing period beginning July 1, there are several teams in need of a starting goalie or are in the market for a backup. NHL.com takes a closer look at the top unrestricted free agent goalies (listed in alphabetical order):

Frederik Andersen, Carolina Hurricanes

The 33-year-old was 21-11-1 with a 2.48 goals-against average, .903 save percentage and one shutout in 34 regular-season games (33 starts) for the Hurricanes this season and 5-3 with a 1.83 GAA and .927 save percentage in nine Stanley Cup Playoff games. Andersen has put up solid numbers when healthy, though he missed extended time this season and the entire 2022 playoffs because of injury. He is 282-125-52 with a 2.58 GAA, .915 save percentage and 24 shutouts in 479 regular-season games (465 starts) for the Anaheim Ducks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Hurricanes and 32-26 with 2.44 GAA, .917 save percentage and three shutouts in 62 playoff games.

Laurent Brossoit, Vegas Golden Knights

The 30-year-old began the season as the backup for the Golden Knights, but started their first eight games in the playoffs before getting injured. He was 5-2 with a 3.18 GAA and .894 save percentage in the playoffs to help them win the Cup after going 7-0-3 with a 2.17 GAA and .927 save percentage in 11 regular-season games (10 starts). Brossoit is 49-41-11 with a 2.78 GAA, .908 save percentage and three shutouts in 117 regular-season games (96 starts) for the Edmonton Oilers, Winnipeg Jets and Golden Knights and 5-2 with a 3.26 GAA and .888 save percentage in nine playoff games (eight starts).

Brian Elliott, Tampa Bay Lightning

The 38-year-old was the third-oldest goalie to play this season (behind Craig Anderson, who was 41, and Marc-Andre Fleury, who was also 38). Elliott was 12-8-2 with a 3.40 GAA, .891 save percentage and two shutouts in 22 regular-season games for the Lightning this season and has played more than 500 games for six teams during his 16-season career. An experienced starter and backup, he has played at least 20 games in 14 of his past 15 seasons, and is 279-167-54 with a 2.57 GAA, .909 save percentage and 45 shutouts in 543 regular-season games (495 starts) for the Ottawa Senators, Colorado Avalanche, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, Philadelphia Flyers and Lightning and 17-26 with a 2.72 GAA, .904 save percentage and one shutout in 48 playoff games (45 starts).

Jaroslav Halak, New York Rangers

The 38-year-old was 10-9-5 with a 2.72 GAA, .903 save percentage and one shutout in 25 games (24 starts) as the backup for the Rangers this season. Halak is 295-189-69 with a 2.50 GAA, .915 save percentage and 53 shutouts in 581 games (539 starts) for the Montreal Canadiens, Blues, Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and Rangers and 17-20 with a 2.48 GAA and .919 save percentage in 39 playoff games (37 starts).

Martin Jones, Seattle Kraken

The 33-year-old had his most wins in a season since 2018-19, going 27-13-3 with a 2.99 GAA, .887 save percentage and three shutouts in 48 regular-season games (42 starts) to help the second-year Kraken qualify for the playoffs. Jones is 225-163-35 with a 2.71 GAA, .905 save percentage and 28 shutouts in 444 regular-season games (430 starts) for the Los Angeles Kings, Sharks, Flyers and Kraken and 32-27 with a 2.36 GAA, .917 save percentage and six shutouts in 63 playoff games (60 starts). He won the Stanley Cup with the Kings in 2014.

Alex Lyon, Florida Panthers

The 30-year-old was 9-4-2 with a 2.89 GAA, .914 save percentage and one shutout in 15 regular-season games (14 starts) for the Panthers this season. Lyon made the final eight starts of the season, going 6-1-1 with a 1.87 GAA and .943 save percentage to help Florida qualify for the postseason. He was 1-2 with a 3.63 GAA and .888 save percentage in four playoff games (three starts). Lyon is 16-11-5 with a 3.05 GAA, .904 save percentage and one shutout in 39 regular-season games (31 starts) for the Flyers, Hurricanes and Panthers.

Alex Nedeljkovic , Detroit Red Wings

The 27-year-old was 5-7-2 with a 3.53 GAA and .895 save percentage in 15 games (13 starts) for the Red Wings this season. Nedeljkovic was 13-9-3 with a 2.71 GAA, .912 save percentage and one shutout in 26 games with Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. He is 42-38-15 with a 2.96 GAA, .907 save percentage and seven shutouts in 103 regular-season games (92 starts) for the Hurricanes and Red Wings and was a finalist for the Calder Trophy, voted as the top rookie in the NHL, in 2020-21, when he was 15-5-3 with a 1.90 GAA, .932 save percentage and three shutouts in 23 starts for Carolina. He is 4-5 with a 2.17 GAA, .920 save percentage and one shutout in nine playoff games.

Semyon Varlamov, New York Islanders

The 35-year-old was 11-9-2 with a 2.70 GAA, .913 save percentage and two shutouts in 23 regular-season games (22 starts) for the Islanders this season. Varlamov is 272-220-64 with a 2.65 GAA, .916 save percentage and 38 shutouts in 583 regular-season games (556 starts) for the Capitals, Avalanche and Islanders and 31-27 with a 2.42 GAA, .919 save percentage and four shutouts in 60 playoff games (58 starts).
