The 32-year-old center missed a 5-3 win against the Ottawa Senators at PPG Paints Arena on Friday and will not play at the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday (7 p.m. ET; ESPN+, CBC, SN1, SNE, SNO, SNP ATTSN-PT, NHL.TV).
"Right now, he's day to day," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "He will not play tonight or this weekend.
"I'm disappointed for him because he had a great game [in a 4-2 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Wednesday]. We think that was a game he could really build on, but we're hopeful that this is a short-term thing and he'll be right back into our lineup. Certainly, the fact that he had as strong of a game as he did the other night is encouraging, and we're looking forward to getting him back in our lineup."
The Penguins play the Carolina Hurricanes at home Tuesday.
Malkin had two assists against the Lightning to become the fourth player in Penguins history with at least 600 assists, joining Mario Lemieux (1,033), Sidney Crosby (741) and Jaromir Jagr (640). He also became the fourth Russia-born player in NHL history with at least 600 assists, joining Sergei Fedorov (696), Sergei Zubov (619) and Pavel Datsyuk (604).
Malkin is third on the Penguins with 55 points (14 goals, 41 assists) in 50 games this season, behind Crosby (58) and Phil Kessel (57), and has 15 points (two goals, 13 assists) in his past 11 games.
Selected by Pittsburgh with the No. 2 pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, Malkin has 985 points (384 goals, 601 assists) in 834 games over 13 seasons.
