A game that saw the first period remain scoreless suddenly turned on its head as the Oilers wrapped up their three-game homestand with a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Blues.
"I thought we played well tonight and so did they," said Blues goaltender Jake Allen. "They're not the Oilers of the last few years, I can tell you that. They're a good hockey club. Obviously, some good additions to their team but I thought we played a fairly good game and just came up short."
Allen, who saved 20 of 22 shots faced, recognized that the Edmonton team brings a new, bigger and faster presence to the ice, but still felt his St. Louis team played well.
The Oilers game winner came about when forward Jordan Eberle created a two-on-two opportunity for Connor McDavid and Milan Lucic, who one times McDavid's pass into the back of Allen's net.
"We made a big error on the two-on-two and that gave them that lead and then we started to have to open it up a little bit," said Blues Head Coach Ken Hitchcock.
"[The Oilers are] big, they're strong, there are a lot of good players. They're going to be a good team."
