Red Wings Maple Leafs

Each Monday throughout the 2025-26 NHL season, ESPN and NHL Network analyst Kevin Weekes will provide fans with a guide of games that will be nationally televised. Today, a look at games for the second week of the regular season.

Highlights include the season debut of "Prime Monday Night Hockey" with the Detroit Red Wings visiting the Toronto Maple Leafs and then the St. Louis Blues at the Vancouver Canucks, and Alex Ovechkin continuing his quest for 900 goals.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 13

Detroit Red Wings at Toronto Maple Leafs (2 p.m. ET; TVAS, Prime, FDSNDET)

"Prime Monday Night Hockey" returns for its second season and kicks off with a doubleheader on Canadian Thanksgiving. First, the Red Wings visit the Maple Leafs in an Original Six matchup, two days after Detroit defeated Toronto 6-3 at Little Caesars Arena. If the Red Wings are going to be a Stanley Cup Playoff team this year, they'll need to prove they can hang with the best in the NHL, so this will be another good test. The Maple Leafs continue a stretch of six of their first seven games of the season at home.

St. Louis Blues at Vancouver Canucks (7:30 p.m. ET; Prime, FDSNMW)

The Blues are looking to sweep a two-game Western Canada swing following a 4-2 win at the Calgary Flames on Saturday, when Jake Neighbours scored two goals about 30 minutes from his hometown of Airdrie, Alberta. St. Louis was one of the hottest teams in the NHL in the second half of last season and is looking to carry that over into this season. The Canucks have a new coach in Adam Foote and are hoping to get back to the playoffs after missing out last season.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14

Tampa Bay Lightning at Washington Capitals (7 p.m. ET; MNMT, ESPN)

Alex Ovechkin continues his quest for 900 NHL goals when the Capitals host the Lightning. He's scored 51 in against Tampa Bay, his fourth most against one opponent, but has yet to score this season. The Lightning enter the week having lost their first two games of the season (0-2-0) on home ice by a combined score of 10-7 and will be playing the second of a four-game road trip.

Minnesota Wild at Dallas Stars (9:30 p.m. ET; ESPN)

The Wild have had no problems scoring goals so far with nine goals in two games. Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy each have six points (two goals, four assists). The question is can they keep up with the likes of the Dallas Stars, Winnipeg Jets and Colorado Avalanche in the Central Division, or stay in the wild card mix in the tough Western Conference? Dallas is off to a strong start again, entering the week at 2-0-0 with 5-4 wins against the Jets and Avalanche (shootout), each on the road.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 18

New York Rangers at Montreal Canadiens (7 p.m. ET; TVAS, CITY, SNE, MSG)

The Rangers had won two straight while outscoring opponents 10-1 before getting shut out by the Capitals on Sunday. It will be tough for them without Vincent Trocheck, a forward week to week with an upper-body injury. He is a complete player who does it all for them. I like what I've seen so far from new Rangers coach Mike Sullivan. The Canadiens are hoping to take a step this year after they were a surprise team last season making the playoffs. They'll be on a four-game homestand after going 2-1-0 in their opening road trip.

Calgary Flames at Vegas Golden Knights (10 p.m. ET; SCRIPPS, CITY, SN, CBC)

The Pacific Division rivals face off for the second time in a week; they also play in Calgary on Tuesday. The Flames have lost two of their first three games (1-2-0) and have a tough schedule upcoming with two games against Vegas and two against Winnipeg in their next six, so these games could be critical for them. The Golden Knights have had all three of their games this season end after regulation and are 1-0-2. Fresh off his new eight-year contract that begins next season, Vegas center Jack Eichel leads the NHL with seven points (two goals, five assists).
