DET@NYR: Longtime hockey journalist Larry Brooks remembered prior to puck drop

The New York Rangers honored Larry Brooks on Sunday with a touching pregame ceremony.

Brooks, who covered hockey and the Rangers for nearly 40 years with the New York Post, died on Thursday after a brief battle with cancer. He was 75.

The team showed a tribute video and held a moment of silence for the legendary writer before their game against the Detroit Red Wings at Madison Square Garden.

Brooks’ seat in the press box was also decorated with a memorial.

“This past week, our Rangers family and hockey community suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Larry Brooks,” said the Rangers PA announcer during the tribute. “His coverage of the sport, the National Hockey League and the New York Rangers in particular for the New York Post, helped connect hockey fans with the team and the game they love.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to the Brooks family,” he added.

Brooks served as the president of the Professional Hockey Writers Association from 2001-2003 and was awarded the Elmer Ferguson Award in 2018, given by the Hockey Hall of Fame “in recognition of distinguished members of the newspaper profession whose words have brought honor to journalism and to hockey.”
