NYI@OTT: Beauvillier pokes puck by Nilsson for lead

OTTAWA --The New York Islanders moved into a tie for first place in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-2 win against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Thursday.

"Sometimes you have to look at the big picture," Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. "We've had some guys out, we've had all that, but when it mattered we found ways to win."
Anthony Beauvillier broke a tie in the third period to help the Islanders sweep the home-and-home series. New York won 5-4 in a shootout on Tuesday.

Valtteri Filppula scored twice for the Islanders (39-21-7), who share the division lead with the Washington Capitals. Thomas Greiss made 35 saves for his seventh win in his past 11 games.
"I've been switching them all year; I feel very comfortable with Robin [Lehner] in, and I feel very comfortable with Thomas in," Trotz said. "That's been a blessing for us this year. It's one of the reasons that we're in a position to be in the playoffs if we can continue to find ways to win."
Brady Tkachuk and Oscar Lindberg scored, and Anders Nilsson made 27 saves for the Senators (23-39-6), who lost for the ninth time in 10 games (1-8-1).
"I thought that was probably one of our most complete efforts in terms of time and in terms of players," Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki said. "I don't think we had any passengers out there tonight. We were working hard, did a lot of good things, got beat by a good hockey club."
Beauvillier jammed in a loose puck at the side of the net to make it 3-2 with 7:31 remaining in the third period.
"I thought [Beauvillier] was really good on that line tonight," Trotz said. "Him and Michael [Dal Colle] and [Mathew Barzal], they had some [offensive] zone time. They haven't been able to find the back of the net the last little while, so it was good for them."
Casey Cizikas scored into an empty net to make it 4-2 with 49 seconds left.
Filppula scored with a backhand shot from the slot to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 5:44 of the first period.

Tkachuk tipped a Ben Harpur point shot to tie it 1-1 at 7:00.
Filppula scored his 15th goal of the season, batting the puck out of midair at the edge of the crease to make it 2-1 at 15:24.
"Out there, he's so smart," Cizikas said of Filppula. "He's always in the right spot, he's always making the right plays. One second he's doing something and then all of a sudden he pulls something out of a hat and you're like, 'Oh my God.' It's just the player he is."
Lindberg scored on a rebound during a scramble in front to tie it 2-2 at 9:13 of the second period.

"At the end of the day I think we're concentrating on process," Senators coach Marc Crawford said. "I thought our process was decent tonight. We want to make sure that our work level is always at a high level. I thought our work level had a check mark there tonight. … [New York is] a good team. They found a way to win the game, and on our side we've still got some lessons to learn."

They said it

"We kind of had a little talk in between the second and third. We weren't happy with that second period. We wanted to come out and play the way that we knew how to play, and I thought we did a good job of that; all four lines, all six [defensemen], [Greiss] with some big saves." -- Islanders forward Casey Cizikas

"The emotion is a positive thing for us right now. The easy thing for us is to say '14 [games] left, we're all going to the Bahamas after, let's ride this out and not get hurt.' But that [stinks]. That's not the right attitude. I think when you see a bit of chippiness and a bit of emotion out there, and compete, it's a good sign for this group going forward." -- Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki
