A versatile forward from Skelleftea, Sweden, Lindberg rose through the ranks of his hometown club team, making his debut in the Swedish Hockey League as an 18-year-old during the 2009-10 season. After finishing with one goal and two points in 36 games, Lindberg had two goals in 10 playoff games and the Phoenix Coyotes selected him in the second round (No. 57) of the 2010 NHL Draft.
Lindberg helped Sweden to a fourth-place finish at the 2011 World Junior Championship, scoring twice with four points in six games, but the Coyotes traded him to the New York Rangers on May 8, 2011.

Lindberg remained in Sweden for two more seasons. He broke out in 2012-13 with 42 points (17 goals, 25 assists) in 55 games, 28 points more than his previous single-season high, then won the Stefan Liv Memorial Trophy as the SHL's most valuable player in the playoffs after scoring 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 13 games.
He signed an entry-level contract with the Rangers prior to 2013-14 and joined them for training camp, but spent the entire season with Hartford of the American Hockey League and finished with 44 points (18 goals, 26 assists) in 75 games. Lindberg improved to 56 points (28 goals, 28 assists) in 2014-15 and made his NHL debut on Feb. 24, 2015, against the Calgary Flames, his only appearance with the Rangers that season.
Lindberg made Rangers to start the 2015-16 season and scored four goals in his first three games, becoming the first Rangers rookie to score a goal in the first three games of the season and the first rookie since Steven King in 1992-93 to score in his first three games with New York. Lindberg finished with 13 goals and 28 points in 68 games and appeared in two Stanley Cup Playoff games in an opening-round series loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
But after dropping to 20 points (eight goals, 12 assists) in 2016-17, Lindberg was left unprotected in the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft and was selected by the Vegas Golden Knights, who signed him to a two-year contract July 4, 2017.
