The native of Hamilton, Ontario, built on the potential he showed during the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs when he had two assists in nine games to help the Senators reach Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Final.

Harpur was selected by the Senators in the fourth round (No. 108) of the 2013 NHL Draft. He made his NHL debut against the Minnesota Wild on March 31, 2016, and got his first NHL point, an assist, against the Pittsburgh Penguins five days later.
Harpur started his career as a forward but switched to defense following a growth spurt at age 16. He played 3 1/2 seasons with Guelph of the Ontario Hockey League and had five points (one goal, four assists) in 20 playoff games to help Guelph win the OHL title in 2014. Harpur made his pro debut with Binghamton, the Senators' affiliate in the American Hockey League, in 2015.
After playing for the Senators and Nashville Predators, Harpur signed a professional tryout contract with the New York Rangers on Oct. 13, 2022. He agreed to a one-year contract Oct. 27, played four games for Hartford in the American Hockey League and debuted for the Rangers on Dec. 15. He agreed to a two-year contract with New York on Jan. 26, 2023.
