The New York Islanders carried on the legacy of one of the most beloved players in their history on Sunday.

The team invited the family of the late Clark Gillies to be the game's honorary flag captains.

Gillies, the immensely popular power forward on the New York Islanders four-time Stanley Cup champions of the 1980s,
died of cancer in January
. He was 67.
The hockey world beyond the Islanders mourned the passing of not only a skilled player who was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2002, but a
larger-than-life personality

Gillies was one of 17 players to play for all four Islanders champions from 1980-83
The Islanders retired Gillies No. 9 in 1996.
