Jonathan Quick placed on injured reserve

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick was placed on injured reserve Thursday with a lower-body injury and is considered week to week.
Quick was injured in the final 30 seconds of the first period of a 2-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks in the season opener Wednesday. Quick is believed to have sustained the injury make a sliding move in the crease. He did not return after he allowed one goal on 15 shots.
It is a big blow to the Kings, who are already without forward Marian Gaborik because of a long-term foot injury. Quick led all NHL goalies in total minutes (4,034:29) and was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy last season.

"Jonathan's a special player," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "You just don't replace that. It's no different than any other star player in your lineup. You don't just replace or expect somebody [else] to play the same way or do the same things, but we also know that we're quite capable at that position."
Goalie Jeff Zatkoff will take over the No. 1 role, and previous No. 3 goalie Peter Budaj was recalled from Ontario of the American Hockey League. Kings goalie coach Bill Ranford participated in practice Thursday, with Zatkoff. The Kings play the Philadelphia Flyers at Staples Center on Friday (10:30 p.m. ET; CSN-PH, FS-W, NHL.TV).
This is a familiar scenario for Zatkoff, who signed with the Kings on July 1, returning to Los Angeles, which drafted him in 2006. Zatkoff was previously with the Pittsburgh Penguins and briefly took over for Marc-Andre Fleury during last season's Stanley Cup Playoffs, winning one game.
"I've been in this spot not too long ago," Zatkoff said. "It's funny - I get the call in the playoffs last year, so I've definitely had situations to prepare me for this. It's a good opportunity and, as a group, nothing changes."

Zatkoff could only smile and shake his head when asked about this happening in the first game.
"A couple of weird situations for me in the past few months," he said. "But it's fun. It's fun to play. And I've played a lot of games. [It's better when] these things get out of your way mentally and [you're] trusting yourself."
The Kings have been in this situation before and actually did well. Quick sustained a serious groin strain on Nov.12, 2013, against the Buffalo Sabres and was out for nearly two months. The Kings went 14-7-3 without him behind goalies Martin Jones and Ben Scrivens.
Sutter reminded reporters that that was a different team with a different makeup. The Kings are confident that they can get through this again. Zatkoff has played in 36 NHL games and never more than 20 games in a season in the NHL.
"Without one of our best players in the lineup … that makes it a lot tougher for us," defenseman Drew Doughty said. "I fully believe we can overcome this and still win games without him in there."
Quick, 30, has a significant injury history. He had surgery to repair a herniated disc in the summer of 2012 and wrist surgery on June 24, 2014, before straining his groin.
