Kids-faceoff 11-9

The NHL and USA Hockey will team up for the bi-annual Try Hockey For Free Day at more than 450 local rinks across the United States on Saturday.

USA Hockey launched the endeavor almost 10 years ago to help try and minimize cost and commitment issues of families who want to see if hockey is for them. The events are free and designed for children between ages 4-9. No skating experience is necessary and certified instructors will be on the ice to help.
During the past 10 years, USA Hockey says 37 percent more kids are playing at the 8-and-under level and 83 percent more girls are participating.
"Just growth-wise, we focus a lot on the 8-and-under category because that's where a lot of families are sport sampling and where most of our new players come in," said Kevin Erlenbach, assistant executive director of USA Hockey. "It's done a lot for us just to be able to get people to see what youth hockey is about without saying, 'Hey, I have to get a full set of equipment,' and maybe commit for a while longer than you do other sports."
Erlenbach projects Try Hockey for Free Day will average roughly 30 new families per site and around 12,000 participants Saturday, and roughly one out four kids will play hockey full time. Posters promoting the NHL Declaration of Principles will also be present. The DOP advances policies, programs and initiatives, while inspiring fans, players and communities to create the best possible experience for the entire hockey community.
"It's great just for families to get a better understanding of what youth hockey is all about and then hopefully engage them in a larger interest in the sport," Erlenbach said.
