WPG@NJD: Devils honor John MacLean with a Ring of Honor ceremony

John MacLean was enshrined into New Jersey Devils history forever on Tuesday.

The team inducted the retired forward into their Ring of Honor during a special ceremony before the Devils’ game against the Winnipeg Jets at Prudential Center.

A tribute video of highlights throughout MacLean’s time with the Devils featuring voiceovers from former teammates aired on the arena video board.

MacLean was joined by his family and former Devils teammates on the ice for the ceremony.

The retired forward stepped up the podium to say a few words.

“It seems like yesterday we were in Montreal walking down to the New Jersey Devils draft table meeting…the guys [who] were intracule in drafting me in the first round for the Devils. As I’ve said, wasn’t sure where [New] Jersey was, but once I got here, I learned to love it because of the fans, because of the group of guys I played with,” MacLean said.

After his speech, a banner with the MacLean’s name was unveiled in the Prudential Center rafters.

Jacques Lemaire, MacLean’s coach with the Devils, presented the retired forward with his red jacket.

MacLean is ranked second in points (701) and goals (347) in Devils history. He played 14 of his 18 NHL seasons in New Jersey, helping the franchise to their first Stanley Cup championship in 1995. He also won the trophy as an assistant coach with the team in 2003.
