The Dallas Stars were active at the NHL trade deadline, trading away four regular players.
Lauri Korpikoski was dealt to Columbus for Dillon Heatherington, defenseman Johnny Odyua was traded to Chicago for minor league forward Mark McNeill and a conditional fourth-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Dallas also traded defenseman Jordie Benn to Montreal for Greg Pateryn and a fourth-round pick and and forward Patrick Eaves to Anaheim for a conditional second-round pick.
Dallas was rumored to be shopping Patrick Sharp, but injury concerns hampered any potential trade. Stars General Manager Jim Nill told the Stars' official website that Sharp will eventually need season-ending surgery.
Per DallasStars.com:
"He's been playing injured for quite a while," Nill said. "He will require season-ending surgery here eventually where he's going to keep playing as long as he can. We're going to keep monitoring it kind of game-by-game, then we'll make that decision, but he will require season-ending surgery, so that's the reason he was not traded."
Dallas' seller status comes as the Stars sit seven points back of St. Louis for the final Western Conference playoff spot. Two other teams - LA and Winnipeg - stand between Dallas and St. Louis. The Stars are 4-6-0 in their last 10 games.
