Enterprise Hat Trick: Hertl caps off hat trick in OT

Tomas Hertl and Alex Ovechkin each contributed to what was a wild game between the San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena on Tuesday.

Hertl had his second hat trick in seven days (also against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Jan. 15) for the Sharks to counter Ovechkin's four-point game (three goals, one assist)
in a 7-6 overtime victory
. San Jose rallied after trailing 6-4 in the third period with Hertl's power-play goal at 10:02 and Evander Kane's game-tying goal at 19:59. Hertl won it by becoming the first Sharks player with a hat trick that included an overtime goal when he beat goalie Braden Holtby at 1:48.

The last time a player from each team had a hat trick in the same regular-season game was Evgeni Malkin of the Penguins and Jannik Hansen of the Vancouver Canucks each scored three goals each in
Pittsburgh's 5-4 victory Jan. 23, 2016
. The Sharks previously were involved in such a game when Joe Pavelski's three goals helped them overcome Martin St. Louis' four in
a 5-4 win
against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Jan. 18, 2014.
Ovechkin has been a part of three dueling hat tricks in his NHL career. He had five points (four goals, one assist) to counter Mike Fisher's three goals in an
8-6 Capitals win
against the Ottawa Senators on Dec. 29, 2007. He and Penguins center Sidney Crosby also had hat tricks in the Capitals' 4-3 victory in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on May 4, 2009.

Ovechkin moves up NHL scoring ladder

Ovechkin's 23rd NHL hat trick gave him 36 goals this season and 643 in his NHL career, moving him past Dave Andreychuk (640) for 14th place on the all-time list. He also has 1,178 points (643 goals, 545 assists), one behind Sergei Fedorov (1,179 points) for most in the NHL by a Russia-born player. He also moved him ahead of Teemu Selanne (22) and into a tie with Jari Kurri (23) for the
10th-most hat tricks in NHL history
. Ovechkin has scored at least three goals against 15 different NHL teams. Six players have done it against more than 15: Brett Hull (20 teams), Mario Lemieux (19), Mike Bossy (19), Wayne Gretzky (18), Selanne (16) and Bernie Nicholls (16).
Despite Ovechkin's heroics, the Capitals lost their sixth consecutive game (0-4-2), their longest skid since losing seven straight (0-5-2) from Jan. 12-24, 2014. They've allowed at least seven goals in three of their past four games.

Goals aplenty

The Sharks and Capitals combined for 13 goals Tuesday, the 15th time this season teams have totaled at least 12 in one game, the highest total through 764 games of a season since 1995-96 (28). Teams have scored at least six goals in one game 131 times, also the highest total after 764 games since 2005-06 (132).

Kuemper, Coyotes stay hot

Darcy Kuemper made 25 saves to help the Arizona Coyotes
win 3-2
against the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre. It was their sixth win in eight games (6-1-1).
Kuemper is 6-0-2 with a 2.07 goals-against average, .928 save percentage and one shutout in eight games since Jan. 4 and
one of three NHL goalies without a regulation loss
since New Year's Day (minimum five games).
His eight games without a regulation loss is the longest streak since Mike Smith won 11 in a row from Feb. 4-28, 2012. Brian Hayward's 12-game run (10-0-2) from March 8-April 6, 1985 is the longest in Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets history.
Arizona (23-22-4) has 50 points, two points behind the Colorado Avalanche for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference, entering its game against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET; SN1, RDS, FS-A, NHL.TV).

Flames extend point streak

Mikael Backlund scored 15 seconds into overtime to help the Calgary Flames
win 3- 2
against the Carolina Hurricanes at Scotiabank Saddledome to extend their point streak to nine games (8-0-1) since Jan. 5. The Flames (33-13-5) lead the Western Conference with 71 points in 51 games. The only time the Flames have reached 70 points sooner was 1988-89, when they got there in 50 games en route to winning the Stanley Cup.
