Nelson, who also scored the overtime winner in a 5-4 victory at Pittsburgh on Tuesday, became the first player in Islanders history to score an OT goal in consecutive games. The only player in NHL history to score in overtime in three straight games is Andrew Cogliano, who did it for the Edmonton Oilers March 7-11, 2008.
The Islanders and Penguins have gone to overtime in each of their first three games this season. Since 2005-06, only the Chicago Blackhawks and Ducks, as well as the Philadelphia Flyers and Carolina Hurricanes, have done so through their first three games of a season series; each instance occurred in 2015-16.
New York (16-3-1, .825) leads the NHL in point percentage through its first 20 games of a season for the third time in its history and first since 1987-88 (14-5 with one tie, .725). It's the highest point percentage for the Islanders through the first 20 games of a season, eclipsing their previous mark of .775 set in 1976-77 (14-3, three ties) and matched in 1978-79 (14-3, three ties).
