With the 143rd overall pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, the Stars selected Jacob Holmes on Saturday from Sault Ste. Marie of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). The 6-foot-1, 205-pound defenseman posted nine points (three goals, six assists) in 57 games as a rookie for the Soo Greyhounds during the 2019-20 campaign, but didn't play in 2020-21 because of the OHL season cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On the international stage, the Alliston, Ontario native represented Canada at the 2019 World U-17 Hockey Challenge where he earned one point (assist) in five appearances with Canada Red.
