VGK@DAL, Gm3: Benn receives cross checking major

Jamie Benn will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Wednesday.

The Dallas Stars forward is facing discipline for cross-checking against Vegas Golden Knights forward Mark Stone on Tuesday.

The incident occurred at 1:53 of the first period of the Golden Knights' 4-0 win in Game 3 of the Western Conference Final at American Airlines Center in Dallas. Benn cross-checked Stone in the neck area after he took him down in front of the penalty box. Alex Pietrangelo already had possession of the puck in Vegas' zone when Benn cross-checked Stone as he was laying on the ice.

Benn, who is Stars captain, was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct. Stone was not injured on the play.

"Just an unfortunate play," Benn said Wednesday. "I think I just need to be more responsible with my body and my stick and put my team in a tough situation. It was pretty unfortunate."

The penalties were upheld upon an official's video review.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: cross-checking. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

"I'm going to have a chat with them this afternoon," Benn said. "Haven't done it yet. We'll see what they have to say about the incident.

"Obviously I didn't want to take a five-minute penalty but the game happens fast, emotions are high and obviously would've liked to not fall on him and I guess use my stick as a landing point."

The Golden Knights lead the best-of-7 series 3-0. Game 4 will be in Dallas on Thursday (ESPN, ESPN+, CBC, SN, TVAS).
