"Patrik is a big, physical defenseman who is an important piece of our [defense]," Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic said. "He plays a significant role on our penalty kill, he blocks shots, and we're happy to have him back this season."
A restricted free agent, Nemeth avoided an arbitration hearing scheduled for Saturday. His plus-27 rating ranked fourth among NHL defensemen last season and his 185 blocked shots led the Avalanche.
Nemeth was claimed on waivers from the Dallas Stars on Oct. 3 and had an NHL career-high 11 blocked shots Dec. 23 against the Arizona Coyotes, the second-most by an Avalanche player in a game (12; Brett Clark, Nov. 6, 2009 vs. Chicago Blackhawks).
Nemeth, who was selected by Dallas in the second round (No. 41) of the 2010 NHL Draft, has 29 points (three goals, 26 assists) in 176 NHL games, and one assist in 11 playoff games.
