Keller, Boyd carry Coyotes to OT victory

TEMPE, Ariz. --Travis Boyd scored at 3:10 of overtime, and the Arizona Coyotes extended their point streak to six games with a 4-3 win against the Calgary Flames at Mullett Arena on Tuesday.

Boyd won it by putting in the rebound of Juuso Valimaki's shot on a 2-on-1 break.

Clayton Keller scored two goals for the Coyotes (25-32-11), who are 4-0-2 during their streak. Connor Ingram made 42 saves, Matias Maccelli had a goal and an assist, and Valimaki and Barrett Hayton each had two assists.
Keller has four goals in his past two games. Since Feb. 1, Keller has 30 points (13 goals, 17 assists) in 18 games, second in the NHL in that span to Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers (37 points; 15 goals, 22 assists in 18 games).
"When things are going good, you want to keep doing what's working," Keller said. "You don't want to get crazy and start doing things [you] don't normally do, When I stick with what's working, I'm successful."
Mikael Backlund, Walker Duehr and Jonathan Huberdeau scored for the Flames (30-24-14), who had won three of four. Jacob Markstrom made 21 saves.

CGY@ARI: Huberdeau scores tip-in goal in the 3rd

Calgary, five points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference, has 14 overtime losses, the most in the NHL.
"To be quite honest, if you play a complete game, you shouldn't have that many overtime games," Flames coach Darryl Sutter said. "That's one part of it. The next part is then you need guys to make a difference."
Huberdeau said, "If we'd won even half of those [14] games, we'd be in the playoffs right now."
Keller's short-handed goal gave Arizona a 3-2 lead at 2:01 of the third period. He finished off a 2-on-1 break after Hayton stole the puck from Nazem Kadri.
"It was an irresponsible goal on their power play for the `shortie' goal," Sutter said.

Huberdeau tied it 3-3 at 14:59, skating to the right face-off circle to redirect Troy Stecher's shot from along the wall.
"We've got to come with a better effort," Huberdeau said. "We've got to get some points. Tonight we got one point, but we really needed those two points. … We have to play harder, especially the position we're in."
Backlund gave Calgary a 1-0 lead at 8:14 of the first period when his wrist shot from the right circle deflected in off Arizona defenseman J.J. Moser's right skate.
Keller tied it 1-1 at 9:22, converting Hayton's pass to the slot.
Keller has 31 goals, the most by a Coyotes player since Radim Vrbata (35) in 2011-12, and 71 points, the most since Ray Whitney had 77 that same season. He has 12 points (six goals, six assists) during a six-game point streak.
"He's found his game. … He's really playing hard on both sides of the puck and he's a complete player," Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. "I'm happy for him now, he has some milestones and some recognition around the industry."

Maccelli gave the Coyotes a 2-1 lead 55 seconds into the second period.
Walker Duehr
answered 1:08 later at 2:03 to make it 2-2 with his first goal in 10 games since Feb. 22, when he also scored against Arizona.
Boyd's apparent go-ahead goal at 7:41 was overturned when Calgary challenged for goalie interference. Video review determined that Maccelli undercut Markstrom's left leg as he played the puck.
The Coyotes are 4-1-2 since the NHL Trade Deadline on March 3, when general manager Bill Armstrong traded five regulars, including defensemen Jakob Chychrun and Shayne Gostisbehere, and forward Nick Bjugstad.
"The boys are playing hard right now, playing with desperation and playing for each other," Tourigny said. "We know we're missing big pieces … so you can enjoy the fact you have excuses, or you can show character and double down, and that's what our guys are doing."
NOTES:Arizona has won four straight at home and is 18-11-3 at Mullett Arena. The Coyotes won 23 home games combined in 2020-21 and 2021-22 at Gila River Arena. … Markstrom made his ninth straight start. … Coyotes forward Nick Schmaltz missed a second straight game with a lower-body injury. … Arizona defenseman Patrik Nemeth did not play after he sustained a lower-body injury during the morning skate. … Hayton has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) during a five-game point streak.
