Avalanche won't trade Barrie, says Sakic

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie, who is scheduled to become a restricted free agent July 1, will not be traded, Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic told the Denver Post on Thursday.
Sakic said he would will meet with Barrie's representatives at the 2016 NHL Draft (June 24-25) and hopes to sign him long-term or work out a contract in arbitration.

"I'd like to do a long-term deal with Tyson. If that doesn't work out, it's expected he'll go to arbitration," Sakic said. "Either way, he'll be here."
Barrie, 24, finished fifth on the Avalanche in scoring with 49 points (13 goals, 36 assists) this season. He has at least 38 points in each of the past three seasons, with 53 (12 goals, 41 assists) in 2014-15.
He has 102 points (25 goals, 77 assists) in 158 games over the past two seasons, which ranks seventh in the NHL among defensemen.
Sakic said he also has had initial talks with forward Nathan MacKinnon, who completed his entry-level contract and can become a restricted free agent on July 1. MacKinnon will play for Team North America in the 2016 World Cup of Hockey in September, but Sakic said he believes the two sides will come to an agreement by then.
"I've sure we'll have it done by training camp," Sakic said.
