Sundin congrats matthews

Toronto Maple Leafs legend and Hockey Hall of Fame forward Mats Sundin sent a special message to Auston Matthews after breaking the franchise record for goals on Saturday.

Matthews scored a pair of goals at UBS Arena against the New York Islanders - Nos. 420 and 421 for his career - moving past Sundin on the Maple Leafs career goals list.

Sundin sent a heartfelt video message to recognize the accomplishment.

"Auston, congratulations on beating my record," said Sundin, who served as Maple Leafs captain from 1997-2008 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2012. "You're going to enjoy it more when your career is over, but it's a great milestone and good luck chasing the big championship with the Toronto Maple Leafs."

Sundin scored 420 goals in 13 seasons with Toronto, spread over 981 games from 1994-2008. He scored 564 goals over 19 NHL seasons, including four seasons with the Quebec Nordiques and one with the Vancouver Canucks.

Matthews, the Maple Leafs current captain, is in his 10th NHL season, all with Toronto. Saturday night was his 664th career game. He is averaging just under 45 goals per season.
