Thirty years ago, on December 6th, 1989, fourteen women were killed in the Montreal Massacre, in a horrific act of gender-based violence. In response to this, the White Ribbon Campaign launched in Toronto in 1991 and has since become a global movement. Among its many calls to action, the movement asks men to wear white ribbons as a pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls. Since then, White Ribbon initiatives have been organized in over 60 countries around the world.

Since 2017, White Ribbon and the Toronto Maple Leafs have worked together to promote the movement's work to end violence against women and girls, to promote gender equity, healthy relationships, and a new vision of masculinity. White Ribbon's vision is of masculinities that embody the best qualities of being human. We engage men and boys in the prevention of gender-based violence by promoting equity and transforming social norms. We challenge and support men and boys to realize their potential to be part of the solution in ending all forms of gender-based violence.
"We count the Toronto Maple Leafs as longstanding allies in ending all forms of gender-based violence in hockey and in the community," said Humberto Carolo, White Ribbon's Executive Director. "We all have a role to play in creating a future free from gender inequality, violence, and discrimination. On this Father's Day, and every day, we can demonstrate our commitment by role modeling healthy masculinities and allyship to promote gender equality in sport, at home, and in the community."
