March 1, 1980 - Ken Morrow joins the New York Islanders after helping Team USA to the Gold Medal in the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid.

It was quite a week for Morrow, who was part of the famed Miracle on Ice game against the Soviets on Feb. 22, 1980, won Olympic Gold on Feb. 24, 1980 and made his NHL debut on March 1. The bearded defenseman took three days off after visiting the White House with Team USA, recharging his batteries before joining the Islanders on their playoff push.

"I was incredibly fortunate with the timing," Morrow told Stan Fischler. "And the opportunity they gave me. I joined a very good team that was on the verge of greatness. For that I says 'Thanks!' to Herb, Bill and Al."

"Also coming right to Long Island after the Olympics was beyond anything that I could have hope for; I was skipping the minors," Morrow continued.

Morrow's first game for the Islanders was also Denis Potvin's return from a thumb injury that cost the Hall of Famer 41 games. The veteran and newbie would be paired together, the birth of a long and fruitful partnership on the blue line. Detroit won the contest 4-3, but things worked out just fine for Morrow, who hoisted the Stanley Cup a few short months later. Morrow owns the distinction of being the first player to win Olympic Gold and the Stanley Cup in the same season.

Morrow played 550 games for the Islanders, recording 105 points (17G, 88A). He won four Stanley Cups with the franchise and currently serves as Director of Pro Scouting.
