The latest drop on Isles Lab pays tribute Ed Westfall and the time the first Islanders captain surprised Philadelphia anthem singer, Kate Smith, handing her a bouquet of flowers on the ice at the Philadelphia Spectrum.
The backstory:
After coming back from a 3-0 series deficit to force a Game 7 in Philly during the 1975 semifinals, the Flyers brought out a secret weapon, Kate Smith, to sing "God Bless America" before the game. Westfall had a plan to surprise the Philadelphia icon, skating out with a bouquet of flowers for Smith, before having the entire team shake her hand.

"I told Gerry Hart to give me the flowers and I'd give them to Kate and this we way would steal some of the Flyers' thunder,"
Westfall told Stan Fischler.
"So I took the chrysanthemums and told the guys to follow me; which they did and we presented them to her and then all shook her hand."

The gesture took the singer's breath away and soured the mood of the rowdy Spectrum.
While the Islanders fell 4-1 in Game 7, eliminating the Islanders in the Stanley Cup Semifinals, Al Arbour saluted his team's maturity by saying, "If I called a practice next week, every one of them would show up."
