Varlamov

The Islanders welcomed Matt Martin and Semyon Varlamov as full-participants for the team's practice on Monday afternoon at United Center in Chicago.

Martin, who missed the two first games of the season due to recovery from his offseason ankle surgery, took rushes alongside his usual linemates Casey Cizikas and Cal Clutterbuck.
"It happened back in March when we played a back-to-back against Washington and the [New York] Rangers," Martin said of the injury. "I blocked some shots in the same spot. I was dealing with that throughout the playoff run. I saw a specialist and we went the surgery route...I feel good and hopefully will be in the lineup tomorrow."
Islanders Head Coach Barry Trotz provided updates on both players following practice.
"He provides that emotional element to that line and to our team," Trotz said of Martin. "He's a smart player. He understands the moments, he brings an emotional element to our team for sure and then obviously, the physical element."
Varlamov has been sidelined with 'soreness' and has been listed on injured reserve, but Monday was a promising update on the Islanders netminder as he joined the group for his first full practice. However, Trotz confirmed that Varlamov will not play on Tuesday night against Chicago.
"He's not going to play tomorrow, then we'll go from there," Trotz said. "Once anybody joins practice he's day-to-day. We'll see if we can get a couple more ice sessions and then, we'll see where he's at. As I've said, we're just going through the protocol that we do for every player. Ramp it up, get them healthy and ramp it up over time. Once he feels that he's ready then we'll put him in the net."
