Thomas Greiss picked up his 100th career win on Sunday, backstopping the Islanders to a 2-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena.
Greiss made 38 saves in Sunday's win, his fourth straight victory at PNC Arena. Anders Lee and Ryan Pulock scored for the Islanders, who picked up their second road win against a Metropolitan Division opponent in as many days.
"It was a really gritty win for us," Lee said. "On a back to back, in a tough environment against a team that plays really well at home, we played a pretty good 60 minutes. We were a little sloppy at times and obviously had to kill a bunch. Greisser and the penalty kill did a great job. We just stuck with our game plan, stuck with our structure and really grinded it out."

NYI@CAR: Greiss moves across crease for terrific save

The Islanders never trailed in Sunday's contest, establishing an early 1-0 lead on Lee's power-play marker in the first and held a 2-1 lead in the third period. Protecting third period leads was a point of emphasis after the Islanders coughed up a 2-0 advantage against the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, but that seems like a distant memory after hunkering down in each of the weekend wins.
"Today we had to grind it out against a team that comes with a lot of heat, a lot of pressure and a lot of pinching," Head Coach Barry Trotz said. "I thought we defended real well."
The Islanders conceded 39 shots to the freewheeling Hurricanes, but tightened up in the third period, holding Carolina to six shots on net.
Special teams were also a difference-maker on Sunday, as the Isles were a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 1-for-4 on the power play.
Teuvo Teravainen scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes. Petr Mrazek made 18 saves in the loss.

      GREISS GETS 100TH WIN:

Thomas Greiss won his 100th career game on Sunday and did so in a place where he's thrived of late.
Greiss made 38 saves for his fourth consecutive win at PNC Arena, all of which have been spectacular games for the Islanders goalie. Dating back to March 14, 2017, Greiss has stopped 158 of 162 shots in Raleigh, allowing only one goal in each of his two starts vs the Hurricanes this season.
"He's given up two goals in two games here [this season]," Trotz said. "They come and they get were going to get 40 shots, that's just what they do in this building. He was real strong. It was good for Greisser. He's one of the guys in the dressing room everybody likes, so we wanted to get a win for him."
Greiss is 100-69-22 in his NHL career.

NYI@CAR: Lee tips Bailey's pass home on power play

LEE EXTENDS POINT STREAK WITH POWER-PLAY GOAL:

Anders Lee opened the scoring with a power-play goal, posting up in the slot and deflecting a Josh Bailey feed past Petr Mrazek.
Lee's goal extended his point streak to four games, while Bailey's assist extended his point streak to five straight contests. Lee added an assist on Pulock's game-winner and now has 11 points (4G, 7A) in 10 games this season. Lee and Bailey are tied for the Islanders team lead in points with 11.
"As a line we're getting going a bit," Lee said. "It's a good feeling and we have to keep those things going."

NYI@CAR: Pulock spins, slaps shot high past Mrazek

PULOCK SCORES FIRST GOAL OF SEASON:

Ryan Pulock scored his first goal of the season on Sunday, as he converted a half-slapper from the slot in the second period for the eventual winner.
Trotz said he was happy for Pulock, who looked relieved to find the back of the net after a slow start to the season. Pulock scored five goals in the preseason for the Islanders and the coach is hoping that this goal breaks the dam for the Isles d-man.
"He's been putting some pressure on himself. He wants to put some numbers up offensively and it's going to come," Trotz said. "It's going to come as the game slows down for him and he gets comfortable with everything."
