Game Preview: Islanders at Maple Leafs

With four games remaining until the NHL's All-Star Break, the New York Islanders are looking to bust out of a four-game winless streak and go into the break with some momentum.
The Islanders are 0-2-2 in their last four games, most recently falling 5-2 to the Carolina Hurricanes on Saturday night at UBS Arena. Simon Holmstrom and Brock Nelson scored for the Islanders, but a hat trick from Sebastian Aho proved to be the difference.

The Maple Leafs are coming off a 3-2 OT loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night, snapping a two-game winning streak. Mark Giordano and Calle Jarnkrok built a 2-0 lead for the Leafs, but Montreal scored three unanswered goals in the comeback win. Toronto sits tied for third overall in the NHL with 64 points.
Monday marks the second meeting between the Islanders and Maple Leafs this season. Anthony Beauvillier scored the OT winner in a 3-2 win on Nov. 21. The Islanders are 2-2-0 in their four trips to Toronto since the start of the 2018-19 season.

ISLANDERS NOTES:

MORNING SKATE UPDATES: Samuel Bolduc was recalled from the Bridgeport Islanders on Monday morning. His status for Monday's game is TBD. The defenseman has 26 points (8G, 18A) in 40 games this season. Cal Clutterbuck was placed on IR in a corresponding move.
Lane Lambert did not reveal his lineup for Monday's game. The coach said Noah Dobson is a game-time decision. Kyle Palmieri and Adam Pelech both participated in special teams drills on Monday, but there is no update on their status for Monday.
- The Islanders offense has run dry in 2023, with the team scoring 15 goals over their past nine games. The Islanders haven't scored a third period goal over that span, with their last third period tally coming on Jan. 3 in Vancouver. Nine straight games without a third period goal ties a franchise record, per team statistician Eric Hornick. The Isles have been outscored 11-0 in third periods over those nine games.
- After going 14 games without a goal, Brock Nelson has scored in back-to-back games. Nelson leads the Islanders with 17 goals this season. Saturday marked the first time this season the Islanders lost in regulation with Nelson finding the back of the net (12-1-1).
- The Islanders power play is 3-for-29 in the past 12 games and is 3-for-54 in the last 20 games.

- Mathew Barzal has gone seven games without a point. Barzal leads the Islanders with 30 assists and 41 points. Barzal also has 10 points (5G, 5A) in 12 games against Toronto. Seven of those points (4G, 3A) have come in six games at Scotiabank Arena.

MAPLE LEAFS NOTES:

• Auston Matthews is riding a four-game point streak, with five points (4G, 1A) over that span. Matthews is tied with William Nylander in goals (24), assists (28) and points (56) this season.
  - Mitch Marner is also riding a four-game point streak, with six points (1G, 5A) over that span. Marner leads the Leafs with 39 assists and 56 points this season. Marner has eight points (5G, 3A) in seven career games against the Islanders.
  - After missing a month due to a collision with Kyle Palmieri, Morgan Rielly returned to the Leafs lineup on Dec. 29. The defenseman has five assists in his 12 games since returning to the lineup and has 21 assists in 32 games this season.
  - Defenseman TJ Brodie has been sidelined with a rib injury since Jan. 7 and while he is reportedly nearing a return, is unlikely to play on Monday.
  - The Leafs are sixth in the NHL in goals against per game (2.64) and ninth in the league in goals for (3.36).
  - Toronto's power play is 8-for-35 (22.9%) in their last 10 games.
  - Ilya Samsonov is 2-0-1 in his last three games. Samsonov is 8-2-2 in his last 12 games with a 2.21 GAA and a .918 SV%.
