Police officers Anthony Pedraita and Frank Vezza rescued 15 residents from a burning building last spring and are recognized as Community Heroes of the Month for December, presented by Northwell.

Early in the morning on Apr. 17, Pedraita was on patrol and spotted smoke from an apartment building in Glen Cove. He immediately radioed headquarters, reporting that residents appeared to be trapped inside the burning building. Officer Vezza quickly arrived on scene and broke a first floor door to assist residents to safely exit the building.

Pedraita, Vezza and their colleagues worked together to rescue a total of 15 residents. Vezza and Pedraita repeatedly entered and exited the smoke-filled building in the effort. They were briefly hospitalized for smoke inhalation and have since made a full recovery.

Both officers were honored during Tuesday's Islanders game at UBS Arena for their heroic efforts.
