The National Hockey League announced today that Mathew Barzal has been named the Second Star of the Week for the period ending Dec. 24.
Barzal, 20, scored six points (four goals, two assists) in three games last week, including his first NHL hat trick on Saturday, Dec. 23 vs. the Winnipeg Jets. Barzal became the first Islander rookie with a hat trick since Michael Grabner (Feb. 13, 2011 vs. Buffalo) and the youngest Islander rookie with a hat trick since Pat LaFontaine (Mar. 3, 1984 vs Toronto).

In 38 games this season, Barzal has 12 goals and 23 assists. He currently leads all NHL rookies in points and assists and is tied for 19th overall in the NHL in scoring.
The Islanders selected Barzal in the first round (16th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. This marks his first time being named an NHL Star of the Week.
