PHI-1920x1080 - HOME

The New York Islanders improved to 2-0 in preseason play, skating to a 3-2 OT win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center.
Anthony Beauvillier scored the OT winner 22 seconds into the extra frame, finishing a three-point night (1G, 2A) in style. Noah Dobson, who picked up the primary assist on Beauvillier's winner, also finished the game with a goal and two assists. Egor Zamula and Maksim Sushko scored for the Flyers.
See below for five takeaways from a second-straight preseason win.

BEAUVILLIER AND DOBSON LEAD THE WAY:

Tuesday's Islanders lineup had fewer veterans, but it was still the regulars who paced the Islanders on the score sheet.
Adam Pelech, who was the senior member of the blue line and was sporting an A, tied the score 1-1 with a wrister from the top of the circle at 8:34 of the second period. Both Beauvillier and Dobson picked up assists on the goal, kickstarting what wound up being a productive night from the pair.
Dobson put the Islanders ahead 2-1 at 6:27 of the third period, one-timing a Beauvillier pass through traffic and goaltender Samuel Ersson for a power-play goal. Both players had a shoot-first mentality on the man advantage, with Beauvillier pulling the trigger from the dot a handful of times on the evening.
Beauvillier, who was also sporting an A, put the exclamation point on an active night, finishing off a give-and-go in OT with Dobson.
It was a productive night for both players, who saw action on the power play and penalty kill. Beauvillier skated on a line with Aatu Raty and Kyle Palmieri, while Dobson spent the night paired with Pelech.

SCHNEIDER STARTS:

Cory Schneider spent the entirety of the 2020-21 season with the New York Islanders, but the goaltender did not see any game action for club.
He backed up a couple of games - notably the Isles second game of the season when Semyon Varlamov suffered an injury in warmups - and played twice in Bridgeport, but almost the entirety of the season on the taxi squad.
That changed Tuesday, as Schneider got the start against the Philadelphia Flyers, stopping 10-of-11 shots in just over 30 minutes of action.
The 35-year-old looked solid in his first NHL action since March 6, 2020 in New Jersey. Schneider was able to control his rebounds early, made a quality stop on a Sean Couturier one-timer on a power play and laid out for a desperation save on Derick Brassard at the side of the net.
The lone puck to beat Schneider was a seeing-eye shot from Zamula in the second period, and Schneider had a misplay with the puck in the first period, but all in all, a good night from a veteran who deserved one after a long year.

BARDREAU BRINGS IT:

Barry Trotz had already praised Cole Bardreau's hustle through the early days of camp and it was on display again on Tuesday night.
Bardreau laid a big, clean hit on Travis Konecny in the first period, which drew the ire of a few Flyers, but that didn't faze the hungry 28-year-old, who narrowly missed connecting on another big check at the Islanders bench in the second.
Bardreau, who had a 10-game callup with the Islanders in 2018-19 and spent last season in Bridgeport, also created a pair of scoring chances on Tuesday. He broke up a pass at the Islanders blue line to create a chance the other way in the first period and poked the puck through a Flyers defenseman, took a shot on Carter Hart and then crashed the net as a follow up.
He also came up with a big block on Ryan Ellis with under three minutes to play in a 2-2 game, the type of night Bardreau needed to continue to make an impression on Trotz and co.
"He brings it every night," Trotz said. "The commitment you saw - he blocked a couple of shots and got under people's skin, he did a good job on the penalty kill. You need that depth in the organization and I think we have that. You have people who can push from behind and that's part of it."

ISLES EXPERIMENT WITH DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS:

The Islanders wanted their veterans to lead the way in Sunday's 4-0 win over the New York Rangers, so it made sense to see established duos like Cal Clutterbuck and Casey Cizikas, or Brock Nelson and Josh Bailey.
Tuesday's lineup was a bit more experimental, with Beauvillier playing opposite Palmieri, Michael Dal Colle playing with Anatolii Golyshev and Pelech and Dobson taking a turn as a d-pair.
It was a solid night for a group without a lot of experience together, especially considering the Flyers iced a vet-laden lineup that included Claude Giroux, Travis Konecny, Sean Couturier, Ivan Provorov and newcomers Ryan Ellis and Keith Yandle.
"They had some very talented people in tonight. There weren't any matchups, we played all six of our defensemen against their top line and pretty well every line against their top line," Trotz said. "I was just looking at our detail, who could handle those moments and the competition and we did pretty well."
The experimentation carried over to the penalty kill, with Beauvillier and Austin Czarnik taking a turn, as well as Palmieri and Otto Koivula. While special teams really haven't been a focus for Trotz during the first week of camp, the Islanders penalty kill was 3-for-3 and is now 6-for-6 in the preseason.

Raty-1920
RATY "NOTICABLE"

Aatu Raty was one of five Islanders to play in both of the preseason contests and continued to make a positive impression.
The Islanders 2021 second-round pick skated 15:17 TOI, had two shots, one hit, two penalty minutes and a pair of giveaways, but was active and hungry on the puck all game. The Finnish forward was also on the receiving end of a hard open-ice collision with Travis Konecny, but was unfazed.
Beauvillier praised Raty's poise, especially for a player in his first preseason camp.
"Really good player, understands the player really well," Beauvillier said. "Always in good position, a lot of skills and a lot of poise. It's kind of rare to see a young guy have that much poise especially in his first two preseason games in the NHL. Really enjoyed playing with him tonight. He made a lot of good plays and was definitely noticeable."

NEXT GAME:

The Islanders take on the New Jersey Devils on Saturday afternoon in Bridgeport, CT. Puck drop is at 2 p.m.
